Paraffin, used in ebru art, is an auxiliary additive that gives the paint a distinctive character, especially in Battal marbling. When added to the paint it creates different visual effects on the tray surface, giving the pattern movement, depth and an aesthetic richness.

When paint with paraffin added is dropped onto the tray, white veins that create a "light" effect form around the paint drops. These veins give the Battal marbling pattern vitality and depth.
Compared with turpentine, paraffin forms, around the paint, larger, more pronounced veins . For this reason the effect on the surface is seen more clearly and the visual impact of the pattern increases.
Paraffin also helps the paint break and disperse in a controlled way on the water surface, creating different textures and mottled transitions. This gives the artist the chance to achieve richer, more original effects on the ebru surface.
